How it works
The calculator takes the full-time salary for the point you choose, multiplies it by your FTE, and adds any allowance. The monthly figure is the yearly pay divided by 12. It doesn’t work out tax, pension, National Insurance or take-home pay.
- Main pay range (MPS, M1 to M6)
- The pay range for qualified classroom teachers. The national document sets a minimum and maximum, plus six advisory points that most schools use. Teachers usually move up a point each year, subject to their school’s pay policy.
- Upper pay range (UPS, U1 to U3)
- A higher range for experienced teachers who apply and are assessed as highly competent, with a substantial and sustained contribution. Often called crossing the threshold.
- Unqualified teacher range
- The pay range for teachers without qualified teacher status (QTS). When a teacher gains QTS they move onto the main pay range.
- Leading practitioner range
- For qualified teachers in posts whose main purpose is to model and lead better teaching. The school sets a range for each post within the national minimum and maximum.
- Leadership group
- Headteachers, deputies and assistant heads. The national document sets an overall minimum and maximum and a range for each headteacher group, based on the size of the school. It doesn’t list the old L1 to L43 points, so the calculator asks for the salary the school has set.
- TLR payment
- An extra payment for a classroom teacher who takes on a significant, sustained responsibility, such as leading a subject or a year group. TLR1 and TLR2 are ongoing; a teacher can’t hold both. TLR3 is for a fixed-term project. Unqualified teachers can’t be given a TLR.
- SEN allowance
- An extra payment the school must make to a classroom teacher in a special school, a special class or unit, or a post that needs a mandatory SEN qualification or involves much more teaching of pupils with SEN than usual.
- Full-time equivalent (FTE)
- Your hours as a share of a full-time post. 1 is full time; 0.6 is three-fifths. For teachers it is measured against the school’s timetabled teaching week.
- Pro rata
- In proportion: the full-time figure reduced to match the hours you work. Part-time teachers’ salary and allowances are paid pro rata, except TLRs. From September 2026 a TLR1 or TLR2 is set by the share of the responsibility you take on, and a TLR3 is never pro rata.
Pay areas and who this applies to
The pay ranges are a legal requirement for teachers in local authority maintained schools in England.
Inner London: Barking and Dagenham, Brent, Camden, City of London, Ealing, Greenwich, Hackney, Hammersmith and Fulham, Haringey, Islington, Kensington and Chelsea, Lambeth, Lewisham, Merton, Newham, Southwark, Tower Hamlets, Wandsworth and Westminster.
Outer London: Barnet, Bexley, Bromley, Croydon, Enfield, Harrow, Havering, Hillingdon, Hounslow, Kingston upon Thames, Redbridge, Richmond upon Thames, Sutton and Waltham Forest.
Fringe: all of Surrey; Bracknell Forest, Slough, and Windsor and Maidenhead in Berkshire; South Buckinghamshire and Chiltern in Buckinghamshire; Basildon, Brentwood, Epping Forest, Harlow and Thurrock in Essex; Broxbourne, Dacorum, East Hertfordshire, Hertsmere, St Albans, Three Rivers, Watford and Welwyn Hatfield in Hertfordshire; Dartford and Sevenoaks in Kent; and Crawley in West Sussex.
England outside London: everywhere else in England.
Academies and free schools can set their own pay and conditions. Many follow the national document, but check the school’s pay policy.
Wales sets its own teacher pay, so these figures are for England only.

Teacher pay questions
How much is M1 in 2026/27?
From 1 September 2026, M1 (the bottom of the main pay range) is £34,069 in England outside London, £35,602 in the London fringe, £39,196 in Outer London and £41,729 in Inner London.
What is the 2026 teacher pay rise?
Pay and allowance ranges and advisory points went up by 3.5% from 1 September 2026. The minimum of the unqualified teacher range outside London went up by 5%. The School Teachers’ Pay and Conditions Document 2026 also sets a further 3% rise from September 2027.
How is part-time teacher pay worked out?
Your salary and allowances are paid pro rata: the full-time amount multiplied by your hours as a share of the school’s timetabled teaching week. A teacher on 0.6 FTE on M3 outside London gets 0.6 × £38,400 = £23,040 a year. TLRs work differently: from September 2026 a TLR1 or TLR2 is set by the share of the responsibility you take on, and a TLR3 is never pro rata.
Do academies have to follow the national pay scales?
No. Academies and free schools can set their own pay and conditions. Many follow the School Teachers’ Pay and Conditions Document, or pay close to it, but check the school’s own pay policy.
What are the L1 to L43 leadership points?
The School Teachers’ Pay and Conditions Document no longer lists L1 to L43. It sets a minimum and a maximum for the leadership group, and a pay range for each headteacher group. The governing body sets a range for each leadership post within those limits. Some schools still use L points as a guide.
