What the pay terms mean

Main pay range (MPS, M1 to M6): The pay range for qualified classroom teachers in maintained schools, set each year in the School Teachers’ Pay and Conditions Document. Teachers usually move up a point each year, subject to their performance. Academies can set their own pay, but most follow it.
Upper pay range (UPS, U1 to U3): A higher range for experienced teachers who have applied and been assessed to move onto it, often called crossing the threshold.
Full-time equivalent (FTE): The salary if the job were full time all year. If the job is part time or term time only, you are paid a proportion of it, often called pro rata.
